The journey to opening Retribution Distilling started some 12 years ago when Richard took up homebrewing. This hobby led to studying Brewing and Distilling at Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh which sparked an interest in distilling. At this time Richard was working in the oil and gas industry on survey vessels, spending over half the year away from home and he decided it was time for a change.
Luckily during this time away Richard had time to plan the start up of Retribution Distilling - sailors of old use to make ships in bottles, the distillery had become Richard’s metaphoric ship in a bottle, which is where the distillery branding was born.
The distillery started off in the garden shed before moving to a unit on a local Farm, and what is clear is that Richard did not want to just start another gin distillery. Retribution Distilling has grown and developed, the distillery now produces rum, and single malt spirit for whisky production, and all from raw ingredients. Casks of rum and single malt spirit have already been laid down for maturation, with Somerset Cider Brandy production starting in 2022/23.
Now it’s just a waiting game till Somerset’s first ever Single Malt Whisky is released in 2024.
Oh and not to forget the gin - Retribution Distilling’s first ever batch of Retribution Gin won two bronze medals at the 2020 IWSC awards.
